This theme is focused on the delivery of new and efficient processes that will be directly applicable to the production of drug-like molecules. Importantly, a key design principle formulated in partnership with GSK is that these new approaches should be broadly applicable in both medicinal chemistry and process development scenarios.

Achievements to date include:

• The N-methyl functionalisation synthetic programme is developing rapidly in partnership with mechanistic investigations in our Sustainable Processes theme.

• The first generation of a novel class of ligands to enable the asymmetric 1,4-addition of boronic acids to unsaturated systems has been established. We are now applying these methods to the preparation of bioactive molecules of direct interest to GSK.
